Asante Kotoko Beat Coton Sport 2-1 To Book Place In CAF CC Group Stage


Two goals in each half by Amos Frimpong and Maxwell Baako was enough for Ghana’s Asante Kotoko to beat Coton Sport Garoua 2-1 an action that see them book their place in the Group stage of the CAF Confederations Cup.

Kotoko started the game on the front foot dictating the pace of the game in the early stages, but the visitors kept a cool head in the defence.

Kotoko striker Yacouba Songne was unlucky not have opened the scoring in the 26th minute when his goal bound shot was parried to over the bar by the agile Coton Sport goalkeeper Bassa Djeri who had a busy afternoon following the number of saves he had to make in the game.

Captain Kamilou Daouda was on hand to give the visitors a surprise lead against the run of play in the 37th minute but Felix Annan in post for Asante Kotoko stretched his elastic limit to grab the ball much to the admiration of the home fans.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 45th minute after Kotoko were awarded a penalty after striker Yacouba Songne was fouled in the Coton Sport penalty box.

Captain Amos Frimpong made no mistake as he slotted the ball home for the first goal to send the teeming fans into a state of celebration.

1-0 was how the first half ended.

Maxwell Baakoh increased the lead for Kotoko in the 53rd minute after capitalizing on indecision on the part of the defenders of Coton Sport.

Coton Sport grabbed a goal in the 86th minute through Oumarou Sali, but it was only a consolation as Kotoko won the game 2-1 to pick all three points against the Cameroonian side yet again.
