CAF CC: Kampamba Brace Sinks Kotoko In Kitwe

Striker Ronald Kampamba on Sunday returned from injury to inspire ten-man Nkana to a 3-1 home win over Ghana’s Asante Kotoko on match –day-three in Group C in Kitwe.

Kampamba limped off in the first half of Nkana’s last match against El Hilal of Sudan at the same venue on February 13.

The match handed the Zambian giants a successive win to complete a perfect six-pointer at home after a 2-1 win over Hilal a fortnight ago.

“Today the match was won on one difference; which was our defensive department, we lacked the understanding of our opponent’s aerial balls,” Kotoko coach Charles Akunnor said after the match.

Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi expressed delight after bagging the maximum six points from their back-to-back home games as the competition reaches the halfway mark.

“Kotoko are a good team and it wasn’t easy for us but I am happy with the way the boys have come out after losing the derby in the league to our rivals Power Dynamos. We prepared very well for this game and the win shows we can fight back and play at any level,” Chambeshi said.

The first three goals all came in a heated opening 30 minutes of the first half of end-to-end action.

Fred Tshimenga put Nkana ahead in the 18th minute when he converted a penalty after Walter Bwalya was brought down in the box.

But the lead lasted until the 21st minute when Yacouba Songne fired in a stunning free-kick to draw level.

However, Nkana restored their lead in the 28th minute when Kampamba blasted in a stunning volley off an assist from Bwalya to see the host take a 2-1 lead at the interval.

Kampamba completed his brace in the 53rd minute when he headed in Kelvin Mubanga’s cross to give Kotoko a mountain to climb.

But Nkana suffered a setback in the 71st minute when defender Richard Ocran was shown his matching off orders after receiving his first yellow card in the 52nd minute for a foul on Songne. However, they held on to snatch victory and extend their unbeaten record at home since 1976.

Nkana have six points from three games, Kotoko have 3 heading into the two sides return leg date on March 3 in Kumasi after sustaining their second successive away loss in Group C.

Zesco host Hilal in next door Ndola in the other Group C clash later on Sunday.
