GFA NC SC: Ashantigold, Wafa Take Early Lead In Special Competition


Competitive domestic football returned home over the weekend after a ten-month hiatus, and the excitement around league centres across the country indicated how stakeholders had missed the game.

With the Normalisation Committee introducing a special, zonal competition in place of the regular league to keep clubs active throughout the normalisation process of the GFA, the thrills and vigour, however remained same as clubs kicked off the new competition over the weekend.

After one round of matches, Ashantigold and WAFA have taken early control of their respective zones after commanding displayed on match day one.

Shafiu Mumuni and Salihu Quattara scored for Ashantigold, who defeated Eleven Wonders 2:0 in the Northern Zone, while WAFA were at their usual rampaging best, dismissing Liberty Professionals 3:1 to go top of the Southern Zone of the Special Premier League Competition, also known us Tier 1 of the Special Competition.

Justice Amartey, Opoku Frimpong and  Ntim Manu scored for WAFA and Frederick Botchway got the consolation goal for Liberty Professionals.

In the only other match of the Northern Zone, Asante Kotoko  also started the competition on a winning not by defeating Aduana Stars 1:0 in a very tight game. Abass Mohammed was the hero for the Porcupine Warriors.

Medeama’s opener with Berekum Chelsea has been rescheduled, while Bechem United were not in action due to the withdrawal of Wa All Stars from the competition.

In the Southern Zone, Kojo Obeng Jnr scored the only goal of the match as Hearts of Oak beat Dreams FC 1:0 at the Accra Sports Stadium, while Karela stunned Ebusua Dwarfs 2:1 in Cape Coast, to register the first away win of the competition.

In the other match of the Southern Zone, Inter Allies and Elmina Sharks settled for a goalless draw in Tema.
