Hosts Ghana Exit 2018 AWCON After 1-1 Draw With Cameroon


The Black Queens of Ghana have crushed out of the 2018 TOTAL Women’s’ Championship after drawing 1-1 with Cameroon in their final Group A game played on Friday.

The hosts swung into full gear right from the blast of whistle mounting pressure on Cameroon but could not find the target.

The Black Queens went into the game knowing they had to win to guarantee their qualification from the group and they scored first through Portia Boakye in the 31st minute after her free kick from 35 yards out beat everybody to enter the goal.

Incensed by the home crowd, Ghana went in search of more goals and were unlucky five minutes later when Sherifatu Sumaila’s shot hit the cross bar with goalkeeper Annette Flore totally beaten.

Against the run of play Cameroon equalized after they were awarded a penalty when Ghana goalkeeper Nana Ama Asantewaa fouled Gaelle Deborah in the box.

The eventual penalty kick was expertly converted by Christine Manie for the equalizer.

The game sprung to life in the second half as both sides made a couple of substitutions aimed at changing the score line.

However, the game ended 1-1 with the hosts crushing out of the tournament with 4 points.

Cameroon thus qualifies to the semifinals having amassed 7 points.
