Kotoko Tame Kano Pillars To Set Up Etoile du Sahel Date

Former African champions Asante Kotoko beat Kano Pillars 2-0 on Sunday in Kumasi to book a date with Tunisian giants Etoile du Sahel at the next round of the Total CAF Champions League.

The Porcupine Warriors lost the first leg 3-2, thus progress 4-3 on aggregate.

The homers started on the front foot dictating the pace of the game, winning a corner in the 1st minute after Emmanuel Gyamfi’s shot came off goalkeeper Suraj Ayelese.

The visitors managed to clear their lines but Kotoko regained possession with defender Habib Mohammed surging forward to lay a pass to Gyamfi who wasted no time to shoot towards the goal but his effort was thwarted by goalkeeper Suraj. However, his clearance met the onrushing Kelvin Andoh who blasted home the opener in the third minute.

Kotoko continued their dominance and pressed for more goals but the likes of Victor Dennis and Nwagua Nyima at the rear of Pillars kept a cool head to weather the storm at the back.

Back from recess and the story remained unchanged as Kotoko continued their dominance but strikers Gyamfi and Naby Keita fluffed the opening chances.

With ten minutes to go, Kotoko dashed Pillars’ hopes of getting the much-needed equalizer that will see them qualify to the next stage.

Gyamfi atoned for his earlier misses after scoring Kotoko’s second goal to send the fans into wild jubilation.

There was late drama in the 90th minute as Kotoko were reduced to ten men after Naby Keita was shown his second yellow card for time-wasting, but they held on to snatch victory.
