CAF Confederations Cup

Mumuni Hat-Trick Sinks Akonangui As Ashantigold March On

Three goals in the first nine minutes from captain Shafiu Mumuni was enough for Ghana’s Ashantigold SC to edge past Akonangui of Equatorial Guinea in their preliminary round second leg of the Total CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday in Obuasi.

The ‘Aboakese’ lads made their intentions known right from the blast of the whistle as they won a penalty in the 1st minute after a defender of Akonangui FC handled the ball in the penalty box.

Mumuni stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent goalkeeper Charly Mosibe the wrong way for the opener

One soon became two as Shafiu Mumuni scored yet another, two minutes later after rounding up the keeper to send the fans into a state of frenzy.

The Ashantigold striker and captain was on a mission and after finding space behind the Akonangui FC defense, he coolly backflipped the ball into the net after receiving a cross from James Akaminko in the ninth minute.

The visitors were feeling the pressure, but they regrouped after the third goal and managed to control the game from then but failed to breach the ironclad defense of Ashantigold.

Sylvestre Mba came closest to getting a goal back in the 32nd minute, but his goal-bound shot was parried over the crossbar by Ashantigold goalkeeper, Frank Boateng.

The second half was no different from the first as both teams played out an end to end performance but failed to find the back of the net.

Not even the changes made by both coaches could change the scoreline as Ashantigold SC advanced 4-1 aggregate.
