Yannick Pognongo Late Strike Sinks Ghana In Kumasi

A 94th-minute strike by Yannick Pognongo Stephane condemned Ghana to defeat as Burkina Faso picked all three points in the CHAN qualifier played at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi.

Both teams have a history together as they played in the same CHAN qualifier in 2017 with Burkina Faso eliminating Ghana.

Ghana drew 2-2 in the first leg in Ouagadougou before they shocked Ghana 2-1 in the return leg at the same venue.

With this at the back of their minds, coach Maxwell Konadu and his boys knew that nothing short of victory will appease the fans and they started the game on a high dominating the earlier exchanges but strikers Shafiu Mumuni and Joseph Esso failed to convert any of the chances that came their way.

Facial Ouedraogo nearly put the visitors in front in the 27 minute after ghosting past defender Mohamed Alhassan, but Ghana goalkeeper Felix Annan was equal to the task.

Back from recess and both teams made a couple of changes to their respective teams with the Ghanaians showing promise in terms of creating chances as the likes of substitute Emmanuel Ocran likening up the game.

But it was the Burkinabes who had the last laugh as they grabbed the only goal of the game in the 94th minute against the run of play through Yannick Pognongo Stephane to pick all three points in Kumasi ahead of the 2nd leg in Ouagadougou.
